This
program links family physicians to innovative programs,
specifically using electronic tools during patient visits.
The educational experience will take place in Dr. Bachman’s clinic in Rochester,
Minnesota or Dr. Davis' clinic in Winona,
Minnesota. The practices the clinician will encounter are completely
automated.
The student will witness the use of:
1) structured data entry. The clinician will learn how to
structure interviews and workflow so patient care and efficiency is
improved. Tools used will include instant Medical History and
Shorthand for Windows. There is a heavy emphasis on
implementing guidelines. Required reading will be:
2) active use of the web during patient encounters to
answer both physician and patient questions. Real time web
searches with patients for information will be taught.
Examples of this include use of google, md consult, powerpoint
presentation, and merckmedicus. The clinician will leave
knowing how to conduct searches in real time and have a personal web
site for improving speed of searches.
3) virtual visits. The basic structure and functioning of
virtual visits will be demonstrated. The clinician will leave
knowing how to start. Required reading will be:
4) registries for disease management. The clinician will
leave with an introduction to registries for chronic disease
management and how group visits are used in this setting.
Additional Details:
The clinician will start the morning at 7:15 a.m. and be
completed by 4:30 p.m. There will be a lunch break for
discussion.
Up to eight hours of CME credit will be provided for the
experience.
