 Tar Wars

Overview

Tar Wars is designed for fourth- and fifth-grade students.

Tar Wars can be presented in one class period (one hour) and preparation time is minimal. Volunteers print out a free scripted lesson plan from www.tarwars.org that walks them through all aspects of the presentation. It includes questions to ask, answers to give, and activities to do with the children.

Tar Wars was developed in 1988 by the Hall of Life at the Denver Museum of Natural History and Doctors Ought to Care (DOC). It has been implemented in 44 states. It was introduced in Minnesota during the 1996-97 academic year, when it reached 300,000 children in the United States.

Tar Wars is operated by the American Academy of Family Physicians.  The program has won awards from the World Health Organization, the American Medical Association and the U.S. Secretary of Health.
