Considering Selling Your Practice?
At the suggestion of the House of Delegates,
the External Affairs Committee has put together a list of MAFP
members who are willing to be resources to their colleagues who are
considering selling their clinic to an HMO or hospital system. The
following are thumbnail sketches of volunteer resources. If you
would like to contact one of them, please call Virginia at the MAFP
office or e-mail her at
vbarzan@mafp.org.
- “I've been involved in bringing three practices into (large system)
and I've served in those practices during and after the transition.”
- “I would be willing to be a resource for private practices that are
considering selling to an HMO or hospital system. We sold our
practice to (hospital) in 2006. We have 10 physicians, 3 physician
assistants and two offices.”
- “I would be more than willing to discuss ‘due diligence’ with those
looking at selling their practices. A good CPA and an attorney that
represents you and your assets are good returns on your invested
dollar.”
- “I was around during the clinic-hospital merger. That was a little
different since we didn’t sell out to a third party (hostile or
otherwise) but rather merged with each other and then with our local
hospital in an attempt to retain local control and avoid the
necessity of selling—either our practices or the hospital. So far
we’ve been successful. Some of the same issues still apply, in
terms of the transition from being business owners to employees,
figuring out the power structure, and so on, and I’d be happy to
talk to people about that if any of it might be helpful.”
- “Been there, done that! You could list me as resource.”
