Student Director/Alternate Director

The student director and alternate director are elected by the student delegates annually at the student caucus preceding the House of Delegates.

Any 1st, 2nd or 3rd-year medical student member of the MAFP is eligible to be a candidate for student director.  The director represents all Minnesota student members at the Academy Board of Directors meetings, held quarterly on Saturday mornings at the Academy office in the Twin Cities.

Election

At the student caucus, candidates from each medical school campus declare their willingness to serve on the MAFP Board of Directors.  One is elected the Student Director and the two Alternate Directors are selected from the two other medical schools so each school has a representative on the Board. 

Student Director Position Description

The Student Director is expected to attend all quarterly MAFP Board of Directors meetings, which meets 5 times a year.  The first meeting is at approximately 5:30 pm the evening of the House of Delegates. 

  1. Other Board meetings are quarterly on Saturday mornings in the Twin Cities.  Mileage is paid.
     

  2. As the director or alternate directors, you are the official voting representative for the Minnesota Academy at the National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students in Kansas City.  Registration, lodging and transportation are paid.
     

  3. You would also serve on the Academic Affairs Committee which plans activities for medical students and residents, and addresses academic issues. The committee meets 4-5 times during the year on weeknights, conference call is an option. The Student Director and Alternates will help with planning the Residency Recruitment Event and Spring Refresher, advise the MAFP in recruiting student members, and help organize an MAFP-sponsored lunch at their medical school.
     

  4. Write one column for the Minnesota Family Physician, regarding your experience at the National Conference, things you want to accomplish, etc.   Write an annual report to be published in the House of Delegates manual.
     

  5. Serve as the main contact person to work with the MAFP staff.  At the beginning of the year, you’ll meet with staff and determine goals and expectations.
