THE MAFP
SPRING REFRESHER
The MAFP Spring Refresher has a long-standing reputation as one of the premier
medical educational programs in the Upper Midwest. In 2008, 370 family
physicians, family medicine residents and medical students attended the Spring
Refresher.
The 2009 Spring Refresher will be held April 16-17th at the Minneapolis
Convention Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We are pleased to offer your company
the opportunity to support a portion of the program by providing an educational grant. As a grantor, your company will be recognized on-site in the
Spring Refresher syllabus, which is distributed to all attendees, and in the MAFP
newsletter, the Minnesota Family Physician, which is sent to more than
3,000 MAFP members.
We estimate an average session costs approximately $1,000 per session. We request
that funding provided be in the form of an unrestricted educational grant. Contributions to the
MAFP are not deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes.

MEDICAL STUDENT INTEREST FUND ACTIVITIES:
National Conference for Students and Residents
Physician recruiters… health care systems… pharmaceutical reps…
looking for an excellent opportunity to have direct contact and exposure to our
future family physicians? Each year at this conference, a social event such as a
reception or dinner is held for the Minnesota attendees. Over the past six years, attendance
at this timely networking gathering has been 75-90 per year.
To support this event, we ask for a minimum sponsorship of $500. Along with your logo displayed on event
invitations, related signage, plus in the MAFP Minnesota Family Physician newsletter,
two representatives from each sponsoring organization will be invited to attend in
person.

Custom Programs - Ward Survival $1,500
The MAFP works with the student liaisons at each
of the three medical school campuses to develop an educational program. Past
education programs have been Ward Survivals which help medical students
transition from academic/lecture style of learning to clinical rotations.
Instruction includes how to write scripts and manage patient meds, the best
resources to use on the wards, night call - how to prepare and what to expect,
agenda setting for patient visits, and working in teams. This particular
program is for second-year students. Both student and presenter evaluations
have been very positive. The best endorsement has been that faculty ask to come
back and there was a waiting list of students wanting to attend. Because some
of the instruction is hands-on, attendance has been limited to 50 students.
Other educational
programs have focused on the breadth of family medicine,
sub-specialization within family medicine, advocacy issues, and
medical student needs in the changing health care environment. A
$1,500 contribution funds this program.
Family Medicine
Interest Groups (FMIG) $3,000
The three FMIGs at each
medical school campus in Minnesota are student-run campus clubs with
a faculty advisor. The focus on programs on specialty choices of
the students, workshops for building skills, and cross-specialty
learning. The $3,000 is divided among the three medical schools.
Mayo Medical
School’s FMIG won an AAFP award for outstanding programming for two
years. They focus on skills training workshops and community
service projects.
UMN Duluth’s FMIG
regularly attains 90-95% of their student body as members of their
FMIG. Their programming is a combination of skills workshops and
social opportunities to interact with practicing physicians and
other health care professionals.
UMN Twin Cities’
FMIG has strong support from the Department of Family Medicine &
Community Health with in-kind donations of supplies for skills
workshops, an energetic faculty advisor and a student steering
committee of 6-8 students.
