Macaran Baird, M.D., M.S., received the 2010 Merit Award from
the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP).
The Merit Award recognizes a family physician who has worked
diligently through the Academy to further the ideals of family
medicine. Candidates are nominated by MAFP members.
Dr. Baird is the Professor and
Head of the University of Minnesota Department of Family
Medicine and Community Health. He was recognized for his
outstanding work with the MAFP in bridging academic and
political worlds to support family medicine.
Some examples of Dr. Baird’s
service include speaking at MAFP Academic Roundtables, attending
MAFP board meeting so that he can stay in touch with issues
affecting family physicians, as well as demonstrating numerous
other examples of positive influence in the medical school at
the medical community.
Outgoing MAFP President, Patricia
Fontaine, M.D., nominated Dr. Baird for the award. “Throughout
his career, Dr. Baird has been a staunch advocate for the values
of primary care and a champion for family medicine,” she said.
The Minnesota Academy of Family
Physicians is a professional association of approximately 3,000
family physicians, family medicine residents and medical
students established to assist family physicians in providing
quality medical care in Minnesota. The MAFP is the largest
specialty organization in Minnesota and is a state chapter of
the American Academy of Family Physicians, the largest medical
specialty organization in the United States, with more than
90,000 members.
