Preventing Chronic Disease Factors in Primary Care

Session Objective: At the end of the session, the participant will be able to 1) name the four behaviors responsible for about half of all deaths in the United States (inadequate physical activity, poor nutrition, use of tobacco, and hazardous use of alcohol); 2) describe the rationale for a universal lifestyle recommendation; 3) explain why a collaboration between primary care and worksite health promotion programs has the potential to be a powerful intervention tool; 4) describe the return on investment (ROI) that some employers have experienced from their investment in worksite health promotion programs (3:1 for health care costs and an additional 3:1 for productivity).

ADHD and Bi-Polar Disease in Children and Adults

Session Objective: The MAFP is pleased to offer a SAM Study Group session on Coronary Artery Disease.  A family physician will facilitate group discussion of the answers to the ABFM Self-Assessment Module on Coronary Artery Disease.

More Information: To cover the administrative costs, the MAFP will charge a fee of $20 to register for the SAM Study Group session in addition to the one- or two-day registration fee for the Spring Refresher. Registration will be limited to 50 family physicians on a first come, first served basis.

Important Note: Fees paid to the MAFP do not include the ABFM Maintenance of Certification (MC-FP) fees. Participants in MC-FP will be required to pay MC-FP fees in order to complete the Clinical Simulation portion of the SAM module. Participants not in MC-FP who desire to receive CME credit for this session will be required to pay to the ABFM the current SAM fee in order to complete the Clinical Simulation portion of the SAM module and prior to receiving CME credit.

Participants will only receive MC-FP credit for the module if they are currently eligible for and enrolled in the MC-FP process; have not already completed the module topic that is being covered in the SAM Study Group session; have not already completed their current MC-FP Stage requirements; successfully complete the Knowledge Assessment portion of the SAM module within the group or afterward if needed as well as the Clinical Simulation and they attend and fully participate in the educational discussion of the entire session. Session Objective:  Problem-solve at least 3 alternative strategies based on small-group, in-depth discussions.  Determine potential "toxic protectors" and "toxic buffers" in your organization who enable the problem - and subsequent actions you will take.  Create a norm of respectful engagement that makes it extremely uncomfortable for the following to survive in your organization - pit bulls, chameleons who "kiss up" and "kick down", prima donnas who get away with tyranny.  Introduce new hiring practices that will increase the probability of bringing on people who promote respectful interactions.  Using systems perspectives, give feedback that really works when these 3 steps are used a) anonymous data-driven feedback; b) tie the feedback to their own self-interests, such that they tell you why their behavior must change to achieve their professional goals; c) use solutions-focused questions to stimulate their desire to change.
